PAPYRUSMILL - Redevelopment of the old paper mill site and surronding area in Newton Kyme North Yorkshire

Background

The Papyrus Works, next to Papyrus Villas and close to the village of Newton Kyme, is a former paper making factory and the site for the proposed Papyrus Mill redevelopment. The site has been derelict since 2003.

It is located on the magnesium limestone belt that runs north to south across north Yorkshire, and sits on the southern banks of the River Wharfe.

History of the site

Between 1936 and 2003 the site was occupied by Stora Enso, an integrated paper packaging and forest products company that produced publications and fine paper, packaging boards and wood products. The works themselves are large scale industrial sheds.

The housing that lies to the south of the site, Papyrus Villas, was built in the 1930s to house the factory workers.

Location of the site

This settlement at Papyrus Villas is affiliated with nearby Newton Kyme, which is an attractive, agricultural village developed around the fortified manor house known as Newton Castle and dates from the middle ages. The site is within walking distance of Boston Spa and within cycling distance of Tadcaster.

Commercial Estates Group (CEG) is the company promoting the redevelopment of the former paper works and have a track record of managing, investing in and developing property, and of turning derelict brownfield sites into productive use.
